Coin Cleaning:
After the coins are sorted by our workers, they are cleaned using the machines shown below.

On the left is a water-based tumbler/vibrating cleaner, which removes dirt and surface residues from the coins. Different cleaning methods are applied depending on the source of the coins. For coins recovered from Incinerator Bottom Ash, we add polishing stones and water into the tumbler to remove heavy surface stains. If the coins come from clean metal sources and have not been exposed to fire, we clean them using only water and a mild cleaning agent.

After cleaning, the coins are placed into the machine on the right — a spin dryer — which spins and heats the coins to ensure they are completely dry and free of debris.
The following two videos provide a detailed look at the cleaning and drying process, as well as the different cleaning methods used for coins from various sources.

Cleaning Process for Coins from Clean Scrap Metal Sources:

Cleaning Process for Coins from Incinerator Bottom Ash:

The images and videos below show our workers sorting cleaned coins by denomination and quality grade.
Although these coins were originally mixed in with scrap metal, they include coins of all face values. However, 1¢ and 5¢ coins are rarely seen in the sorting area, as their low redemption value makes it economically unfeasible to ship them back to their country of origin for exchange. These coins are typically melted down along with the scrap metal.

The general composition of unprocessed recovered coins is as follows:

Approximately 30% Grade A – Circulating quality, reusable
Approximately 35% Grade B – Non-circulating quality, with wear, discoloration, etc.
Approximately 30% Grade C – Damaged, burned, or deformed
Approximately 5% Waste items – Tokens, non-metal coins, bottle caps, melted coins, etc.
